The Legacy of Chevrolet

The history of Chevrolet runs parallel to the history of the American auto industry. Chevy is one of the oldest brands in the country, with a legacy going back more than 100 years. Founded in 1911 by brothers Louis and Arthur Chevrolet (Swiss race car drivers and enthusiasts) along with William C. Durant, Chevy got its start in Detroit. Durant had been one of the founders and heads of General Motors, but he had been pushed out of his position in 1910 due to his efforts to turn GM into a larger, multi-brand car company. Chevrolet was founded as a company for drivers with a passion for cars and immediately set itself apart by its use of Overhead Valve (OHV) engines designed to deliver impressive power and performance.

In 1913, Chevy introduced its first model, the Series C Classic Six, which was a fantastic car, but it was a bit expensive for the auto market at the time. Louis Chevrolet and Durant disagreed on the direction to take the company, and Chevrolet sold his share of Chevy to Durant in 1914. In 1915, Chevy introduced a more-affordable Series 490 vehicle that proved very popular. By 1916, the company was successful enough that Durant could afford to purchase a controlling interest in General Motors, retaking management of the company he had founded less than a decade prior. In 1918 Durant became the president of GM.

That same year, Durant merged Chevrolet with General Motors, and Chevy became a division within GM. This was part of Durant’s greater vision, which resulted in the creation of a multi-brand car company that lives on today with GM, including divisions for Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. In the decades that followed, Chevy established itself as an industry leader with budget-friendly models for a wide range of drivers that delivered excellent performance thanks to developments like the Stovebolt six-cylinder engine in 1929, which revolutionized engines.

Following World War II, Chevy continued its presence as a market leader and introduced a number of legendary models, including the Corvette, Bel Air, and Corvair. These were joined in the decades that followed by other cars like the Chevy Chevelle, Camaro, and Nova––each becoming a success and finding fans in a wide range of markets. Chevy also came to dominate the truck market with its powerful engines and fantastic pickups, including the C/K models and the modern Silverado truck series. In recent years, Chevy has continued its trend of leading the industry by developing innovative all-electric technology, exquisite interiors, and cutting-edge performance thanks to new designs like the mid-engine C8 Corvette.
